The Undergraduate Concentration in Philosophy

“Philosophy” literally means “love of wisdom.” It is an activity people undertake when seeking to understand fundamental truths about themselves and the world in which they live.  Philosophy emphasizes the Core Values of Bethune-Cookman University.  Among these values are: integrity—to live in a way that reflects our deepest conviction is the goal of Philosophy’s study of Ethics and its encouragement of moral reflection; respect—to understand our humanity and our place in the world is at the heart of philosophy’s mission; service—to define social justice and embrace why it is incumbent upon each of us to work to achieve it is something that Philosophy insists upon.

While fostering the development of critical thinking and effectiveness in crafting innovative solutions, Philosophy introduces, reinforces, and leads to mastery of such skills as logic, argumentation and debate, evaluation of options, and ethical judgment. As a Philosophy student, you can be among the top candidates for law schools, and in high demand for all other graduate programs whether in philosophy, business administration, political science, education, or medicine.
