International Academic Journal to Publish B-CU Faculty Research Paper

An academic research paper authored by two faculty members at the Bethune-Cookman University’s School of Business has been accepted for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Interdisciplinary Economics. Dr. Aysar Philip Sussan, associate professor of international business, and Dr. E. M. Ekanayake, associate professor of economics, wrote the paper titled “U.S. Vertical and Horizontal Intra-Industry Trade Patterns with the Middle East.”

Dr. Sussan presented the paper at the 9th Annual International Business Research Conference held recently at the University of North Florida’s Coggin College of Business.  Acceptance of the paper for publication was based on the peer review of nearly 70 papers presented at the conference.  Only the top five papers will be published. Publication is scheduled for 2010.

The paper focuses on the patterns of the U.S. trade and investment with the countries in the Middle Eastern region, which provides a brief discussion of the general performance of the U.S. international trade and investment with the Middle East during the past sixteen years. This study uses detailed trade data and discusses the empirical results of the estimated regression models based on country-specific analysis such as: per capita income, difference in economic size, distance, difference in factor endowment, trade orientation, trade intensity, and foreign direct investment.

“The entire B-CU family is very proud that the work of Drs. Sussan and Ekanayake is being recognized by a distinguished academic journal with an editorial board of international scholars,” commented Dr. Aubrey Long, dean of the B-CU School of Business. “Their work demonstrates the caliber of faculty we have at Bethune-Cookman University.  Students at B-CU’s School of Business are learning from professors who are at the top of their field.”

A native of Baghdad, Iraq, Dr. Sussan received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in industrial engineering from Columbia University in New York City and a Doctorate of Business Administration degree in international business from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.  At B-CU, he teaches in the area of international business and quantitative methods.  In addition to publishing more than 60 research papers, Sussan serves on the editorial boards of eight academic journals. He has provided management training seminars for major corporations including AT&T, American Express, Dow Chemical, International Trade Alliance, and many others.  In May 2009, Dr. Sussan will serve as an international conference chair for the Annual International Conference on Global Business in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
