B-CU Students Offer Tax Preparation Assistance to Community

Daytona Beach, Fla. – For the next two months, students at Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) will offer free income tax preparation services to low- and moderate-income members of the local community, under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service’ (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.  Tax preparation assistance will be provided to both students and non-students through April 13.
The students participating in the program are accounting majors in the B-CU School of Business who have been trained and certified by the IRS. Each of the students underwent approximately 20 hours of training and testing to achieve this certification. This is the second year that there will be a VITA site on the B-CU campus.  

Program Details:

What:  Free income tax preparation services for low- to moderate-income taxpayers.  All students qualify.

When: Every Wednesday through April 13 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.
             Three Saturdays 2/19, 3/12, 4/2 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Directions from International Speedway Boulevard:  Turn north on Lincoln Street.  Turn right into first driveway past the Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center.  

Requirements:  Individuals must bring the following items with them to receive tax preparation assistance:
  • Social Security card(s) or B-CU Student ID Card
  • Birth dates for self, spouse and all dependents
  • Current year tax package if received
  • Wage and earnings statement(s) - Form W-2, W-2G, 1009-R - from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements (Forms 1099)
  • Copy of last year’s tax return, if available
  • Bank account number for direct deposit
  • Total paid for child care provider
  • Any other tax form received
  • Any deductible expenses
