B-CU Students have a Heart to Serve, Even Before They Depart.

B-CU’s Pre Medical Society members have successfully become civically engaged in the surrounding community. Most recently, they volunteered to help Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM) double the amount of food distributed to homeless residents.

According to Halifax Urban Ministries Community Relations Director, Mark Geallis, HUM has been experiencing a “critical shortage” of donated food for the past few years. Fortunately, our Pre -Med Society was able to donate three shopping carts full of groceries to HUM, which they collected during HUM’s "Love Your Neighbor" food drive.

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of B-CU’s Pre Med Society, Halifax Urban Ministries plans to distribute more than 500 tons of food to local homeless residents. That amount more than doubles the 240 tons of food that was distributed in 2011.

HUM’s large collection has also allowed the company to be able to cater to local families in need. “Through our partnerships, we are now also distributing hundreds of bags of food at schools to families of children that suffer from nutritional challenges,” said Geallis.

The B-CU family, Halifax Urban Ministries, and the citizens of Volusia County extend their extreme gratitude towards the members of the Pre Med Society.
