Beginning with the Freshman Year, students are expected to become actively engaged with the services and opportunities offered through the College’s Office of Career Services. The undergraduate years will go by very quickly and, with the assistance of Career Services staff, each graduating senior will have developed mastery in such critical employment and employability areas as
  • Writing Winning Cover Letters
  • Resume Writing
  • Professional Dress
  • Business Etiquette
  • Interviewing
  • Networking Skills
  • Mastering the Job Application Process

As students enter the College, they are encouraged to research their chosen careers through the resources provided through the Office of Career Services. Students who have not declared a major should sit with Career Services staff who will help them explore careers as well as offer them a variety of aptitude and career assessment surveys.

As students progress in their matriculation, they will want to attend the annual Graduate School Symposium and Graduate School Fair. Representatives from a variety of graduate schools provide information about their respective institutions and programs as well as answer questions during a 2-hour evening program.

The Office of Career Services also offers the following information, materials, and services to all students:

  • Career Resource Materials
  • Campus Recruitment Program
  • Internships
  • Part-Time/Full Time Employment

The Internship Process

Beginning in their sophomore year, students are eligible for internships. It is expected that students will consult with their academic advisors to determine specific curriculum, classification, or tests completion requirements for those internships being taken for college credit. Internships taken for academic credit must be approved by the Chairperson of the student’s major department. Following satisfaction of strict criteria, interested students may seek nonacademic credit internships.

The College requires that all students applying for internships maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average. While the College has set a 2.0 minimum grade point average requirement, students should be aware that individual agencies/businesses may establish higher requirements or additional/different prerequisites. Internships provide students with major-specific practical experience. Most internships are unpaid. This determination is made by the agency/business.

The staff of Career Services encourages all students to utilize Career Services when considering or planning to pursue an internship opportunity. Opportunities are available throughout the country and Career Services staff will help students navigate the particulars of these kinds of internship opportunities.

Students who are offered and who accept internship placements are expected to conduct themselves as Bethune Men and Bethune Women at all times. Students taking internship hours are admonished to remember that the College’s relationship with various businesspersons and companies is highly valued. Excellent performance and accountability often lead to offers of full or part-time employment.
