Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation Welcome

Welcome to the Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation, the home of the founder of Bethune-Cookman University and accomplished educator, activist and visionary!

We invite you to experience history and to expand your knowledge on the private life of Mrs. Bethune that impacted her thoughts, ideas, and image throughout the world. This historic landmark is open to the public for each visitor to walk in the same place, that she referred to as "The Retreat." Expect unknown facts, the story behind many notable visitors and events including First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Robinson, Langston Hughes, and Ralph Bunche, plus original personal artifacts and more with a visit.

The home was purchased in 1913 and the primary residence of Mrs. Bethune until her passing in 1955. On December 2, 1974, the home was awarded designation of National Historic Landmark by the United States Secretary of Interior.

Thousands of visitors from around the world come every year to experience the legacy of Mrs. Bethune. So, join us by making the Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation a destination on your next trip!
