Message from the President: Campus Community Update

campus community update

Dear B-CU Community:

I am tremendously pleased to communicate that Bethune-Cookman University’s accreditation remains in place and we have migrated off probation. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges notified us of their decision late yesterday. This news comes after nearly two years of unimaginably difficult work. This decision represents the culmination of our collective effort and I am immensely grateful to this community for all its support. The SACSCOC review process was extraordinarily rigorous and we met (and in some instances exceeded) the conditions that were put before us.

This is an enormous accomplishment and it reflects the very best of B-CU: strength, resilience, faith, and an enduring commitment to doing what is right and necessary in support of our students and our legacy. While much work remains in a post-COVID environment, there is no doubt as to our ability to secure the future of our beloved University and to sustain the vision of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.

Included here is the public announcement that has been distributed this morning. We will have our own distanced celebratory announcement on Tuesday, September 8 at 11 a.m. in the University Chapel. The celebration will be held in the Chapel due to COVID-19 testing being facilitated in the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) next week. For obvious circumstances, we will not be able to accommodate as many people as we would like. However, the September 8th event will also be live-streamed. An electronic sign-up form will be sent out to identify approximately 70 students, faculty, and staff to attend in person. For those not able to access the Chapel for the event, we will plan a way to fellowship and celebrate our accomplishment safely and within the parameters of our distancing guidelines this coming Tuesday.

We look forward to seeing you! I want to express my most sincere gratitude to our board, our faculty and staff and to my leadership for their support over the course of this past year. Hail Wildcats!

Sincerely,
