B-CU Faculty Certification Program for Teaching Online and Blended Courses Statement

To ensure its online faculty meet the highest standards and are fully prepared to promote teaching and learning utilizing the new LMS, Canvas, Bethune-Cookman University has implemented a comprehensive three-part certification training program for teaching online via the BJ Moore Center for Faculty Innovation (BJMCFI). Beginning Fall 2020, faculty who previously were fully certified to teach online under a formerly licensed Learning Management System (LMS) at B-CU but had not yet received official training in Canvas, were required to complete re-certification in Canvas.

Certification/Re-certification training consists of passing three (3) courses:

Canvas Test Out    Registration    -or-

Canvas [Fast Track]    Registration

Course Design/Improvement

Registration

Quality Matters Canvas

Registration

Successful completion of each course requires a minimum of 85%. Faculty who wish to teach online without full certification must successfully complete either:

Canvas [Test Out] – an interactive self-paced course designed for experienced Canvas users in which they demonstrate their Canvas LMS skills. Canvas Test Out is offered continuously throughout the semester. Faculty have 24 hours to complete the course; or

Canvas [Fast Track] – a streamlined, self-paced course designed to familiarize faculty and staff with B-CU’s institutional learning management system—CANVAS—and its potential to enhance teaching and learning. Like Fast Track, Test Out is offered on a continuous basis throughout the semester.

Faculty who wish to become fully certified to teach online, in addition to completing Fast Track or Test Out, must also successfully complete:

Course Design/Improvement - a newly revised, multi-faceted course that prepares faculty to implement effective course design best practices and principles from instructional design theory, online teaching and learning pedagogy. The course also addresses Quality Matters standards used to promote academic success for all learners in higher education. Faculty will also have an opportunity to enhance existing courses for the next semester. Offered at designated times during the semester.

Quality Matters/Canvas – a two-week course that requires faculty to successfully complete the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric Workshop. Completion of Quality Matters is a prerequisite for Course Design/Improvement. Offered at designated times during the semester.

Certification

After fulfilling the requirements for each course, faculty receive a certificate of completion from the BJMCFI. If faculty completed certification prior to 2020, an acknowledgement of their completion was sent by the eLearning Administrator. This document will serve as proof that they have satisfied certification requirements in place at that time. However, beginning in Fall 2020, faculty must be Canvas and Course Development/Improvement certified to be certified. (Note:  Faculty who previously completed the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric Workshop do not not have to retake it.)
