We are excited to welcome you to the Bethune Cookman University Office of Student Resource Services. Below are a few notable differences between high school and college accommodations. Please know that we are here to assist students with a successful transition to college.

We encourage students to register with our office during the summer before starting college. This will give you a head start in identifying accommodations and accessing other resources that can support your success.

Identification

  • High School: Students are identified by the school districts.
  • College: Students must self-identify by registering with the Office of Student Resource Services.

Privacy

  • High School: Information is shared with parents/guardians.
  • College: Each student's privacy and confidentiality are respected and maintained.

Placement and Accommodations

  • College: Placement and accommodations are handled directly between the student and the institution, without involving parents/guardians.

Instructor Awareness

  • High School: Special Education teachers are typically familiar with the student and aware of their specific challenges, strengths, and weaknesses.
  • College: Students are responsible for initiating conversations and communicating any concerns to college instructors, advisors, and staff in the Office of Accessible Education.

Time Management

  • High School: The school district arranges the student's weekly schedule.
  • College: Students are responsible for managing their own time. The Office of Student Resource Services staff are available to help develop effective time management strategies for academic success.

Reminders and Deadlines

  • High School: Teachers remind students about exam dates and assignment deadlines.
  • College: Students are expected to keep track of exam dates and assignment deadlines by reviewing the course syllabi.

Altering Courses and Programs

  • High School: Courses and programs can be significantly modified.
  • College: Courses and programs are not significantly modified. However, the College will provide appropriate accommodations and access to support students.
