Research, Scholarship, and Creative Expression* are the primary mechanisms for the creation, dissemination, and preservation of new knowledge, which is the cornerstone of the Academy. Bethune-Cookman University recognizes the strength of synergy between scholarly works and education and seeks to foster a culture that values the integration of research and education. The commitment to connecting scholarship and education is critical to academic excellence and vital to achieving the Institutional Mission to “…develop global leaders committed to service, life-long learning, and diversity by providing a faith-based environment of academic excellence and transformative experiences.”

Vision

The vision, derived from the Institutional Vision, encapsulates the concept of a holistic, integrated university and focuses on niche creation.

The vision for research development is to establish Bethune-Cookman University as a premier institution for the integration of research and education, inculcating a thirst for knowledge in our students through values-motivated research as identified by the four following focus areas:

  • Social Justice: includes Criminal Justice and Policing, Educational Justice, Environmental Justice, Health Equity
  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation
  • Data Science: includes Computer Vision and Embedded Systems, Visual Analytics
  • Science of Learning

Mission

The mission of Research Development in the Office of the Provost at Bethune-Cookman University is to foster integration of research and education in a way that engages faculty and students to address and seek solutions to the problems that plague our communities, both locally and globally through the creation, dissemination and preservation of new knowledge within their discipline.

The Office of the Provost works closely with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research to support faculty engagement in research.
